So when I talked to her, I said, hey, Ive got to tell you, first of all, the executive committee at Saturday morning run says, this is a good thing. The most meaningful thing that you can never take for granted is we gave about 850 part-time workers rings to get done. Then I think the big huge growth for NBA is how do we really figure out what our media is domestically and what it is internationally like in the next two years, which is changing dramatically. Peter Feigin: Yeah. We hired a great human capital person to build up the structure, but it was really best practice. He loves people and he'll go nearly to any length to support, develop and back the people he works with. "We know the reality is 18 months ago, no one would've said Giannis is one of the top five players in the NBA, so we've had really what we would call the Giannis Effect," Feigin explains. But now, going into the future, obviously in the present now, we got fans at the games now, which I know is massive for the organization. So, just being a part of that, I mean, I know it sounds crazy. "I got to tell you the enthusiasm Peter has brought to the city has been brought right back. With your owners and partners and this great group of people you put together, whats the future look like for the Bucks and what can some of the fans expect in the upcoming season? But I think, those are the things that like, yes, you can always pay people. Peter, talk a little bit about the future. Whos got next? Lee said. Peter Feigin, president of the Milwaukee Bucks. And I know you had a background in marketing and you worked with the Knicks at certain points in your career. Peter Feigin: Well, Mr. Red, it's kind of for naught, I'd do anything for you, so this is an easy period of time. Antetokounmpo, now in his fifth NBA season, has become a basketball and cultural phenomenon. Now, the lockdown has forced some of The Runs longstanding members to confront their athletic mortality. We call it volundeering. So, if you're against equality, then we probably never will understand or get along or agree with each other." The facilities part was easy. Im like, we actually, might have a chance to get this done and to make a long story short, and unfortunately my twin brother thinks like I owe him a commission, for. The entire Saturday morning crew has done a few Zoom calls. We've gotten through conversations. We hired an unbelievable CFO. Lasry, 60, had already become less of a regular presence in recent years. You know what I mean? We're talking about localizing all of our social, so in every language you can imagine to absorb it from us, so we can tell the story. So I'm never a great example of where the balance is and what the cut off is in everything because it's all one big puzzle to me. Talk about that as far as the league and the individual teams. Our expectation is to win a championship. Id worked for the New York Knicks. Back when the Feigins (now teenage) sons were much younger, Lasry suspected that Peter or Dan would give them a secret signal to scamper onto the floor if their team was losing. By the way, its so much fun. "Very simply, we went into the market and said, 'We're going to build this market. And like, "Hey, you got to hear my idea," or something. It all matters what state youre in and whats going on with the legislation. I said, "Man, make sure you represent." How do we rethink it? It was just such a big deal. We discussed his incredible career accomplishments at major brands, his rise from recruiter to President, handing out parking tickets in the Bucks lot, working for social justice in the epicenter of the global movement, and his unique leadership style. I suggested a lot of people who would be great presidents, and lo and behold, none of them worked out to do it, so I think they had to default to me to run the company.". He ends up being a generational player like you couldnt, if you were writing a Disney movie, which they have now written and now produced, it would be the fodder for a Disney. Giannis Antetokounmpo is the gift that keeps on giving for Bucks' management. Michael Red: Peter, Peter Feigin. We got here and kind of the first job was to look for a site and the second job was to really get public backing to build an arena, to demolish the Bradley Center and build a new arena, which were monumental big things to happen. Well the goal on the court is we want to win a championship. We're talking about taking global influencers from F1 drivers to surfers, to everybody else. There's no way that the reverence, the likeability and kind of the coolness of the Milwaukee can't be a team and a city that the whole world cheers for in such a big way. And from your perspective, how was the bubble? And I obviously was kind of like I call myself the Division 3 dream. The facilities part was easy. The players, nobody has the awareness that, most of our players are between 20 and 30 years old and it's like for the rest of the world, it's like the most developmental time. And you do it, for us, kind of my job was to be that rock and support and think about if you told me that 50% of my time would be spent on making sure everybody is okay. I really hope I get to meet you in the future. You cant imagine. We have resources, we back them up, whatever you need, it's part of it. But for the first time since 1992, the game has been shelved indefinitely because of the coronavirus pandemic. Lee, 50, has worked to keep in shape by doing yoga and shooting hoops in his backyard. And I think with time, you certainly kind of can take that. That was one of these monumental, incredible, awesome times to get it done. Peter: did active, to get in. I'm like, "I don't know. Where were you on sports? You didnt study sports. I never wanted to be that guy with the goggles and the knee brace and the tucked-in shirt being like, Hey! "We didn't have much time," he says. The people part is always tough. This guy is a relentless workaholic who is selfless to his teammates and like wants to win. Maybe I'm biased, but knowing you and seeing what you've done with the Bucks. One Thursday night he gave me a call and said, Do you think you can go to Milwaukee and talk to Senator Herb Call. Talk a bit about how to do that without bruising anyones ego and keeping everybody happy. And I knew who Arthur Ashe was, but I wasn't a big tennis guy and my job was basically being Arthur Ashe's right hand person through. Hey, its a job. And that's kind of like you do it with great people around you. You can always have a kitchen with food in it. That is like what you live for. We were sitting brainstorming like, how do we keep people employed? We were either 29th or 30th in a league of 30 teams, we were in a 25-year-old arena, that part of this was how do we get a new arena built? It will host 200 events each year with the Bucks and Marquette men's basketball as anchor attractions. Youre going to actually have to be a decent person and not be toxic. But you would say I kind of got to play through high school college with just grit and will and really like persistence and relentlessness. I think one of the big skills is, I definitely do not know the answer to everything and if youre able to Basically I do think I can solve anything. He was unfamiliar with Lasry, then his friend filled him in. The world is incredible. Michael Red: The facilities, everything that you guys have done so far is remarkable. Last Wednesday, Milwaukee Bucks president Peter Feigin told the Rotary Club of Madison that Milwaukee is "the most segregated, racist place I've ever experienced in my life." The full quote,. Peter: Yeah, it is a combination of both because you really, I had a real rare opportunity to get out of sports and work outside of the sports industry for wealth. Number one, were in the middle of COVID. In a 10 year phase, I started with a startup with Marquis Jet, with Kenny Dichter and Jesse Itzler who started the business and came from sports. Then you talk about what your leadership is and what your purse is so it all starts and ends with Giannis. Now, youre talking to your wife and your children and youre moving from New York City to Wisconsin. Peter Feigin: And I think I kind of have this delusion that there's nothing that I can be a part of, that we can't accomplish. You're a true friend, Peter, at least until you drop the parking ticket on me. And he said, "Yes, sir. So, it really is kind of like all of us working together to figure out what the balance is. When Khris was a rookie, I said, "Do you know whose jersey you wearing?" And that's before you're worried about what a health scare is. Going back into the past is something I wanted to ask you about. He captained. So I've been ticketing him with $5,000 tickets, $50,000 tickets with little notes. You sound super excited about the future. Does he play defense?. And nobody's going to question how great Milwaukee is." We heard it straight from. John: You grew up on the Upper East Side, you are a native New Yorker, your brothers still back there. Talk a little bit about where you even grew up, how you even got here. Incredibly these three guys were literally engaged. Talk about that. Hes very straightforward. Nobody ever thought it would be a year shutdown, but our owners are kind of incredible people, who want to see a plan, who want to see a recommendation and want to go forward. Everybody knows everybody. So, how do we figure out and reorganize on the senior leadership pattern. We are one big family. Feigin, who had held executive positions at Madison Square Garden, Marquis Jet Partners and NetJets, packed up his New York home and went to Milwaukee in 2014. Hes with us today. Then you mirror that off the court. Are you allowed to talk about that, Peter? Whether youre building an arena, whether youre building infrastructure or a team, whether youre dealing with the same problems, it is really powerful to end up with, when you come up with conflict and problems or you need solutions, or you need smart brains to be able to pick up the phone with 5, 10 like-minded people who are dealing with the same stuff. We've developed about 75% of it and people are living here, working here, and playing. I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. We built an infrastructure, to our owners' credit on, they made it really simple. I better go home and talk to Natalia to do it. During a media car wash in NYC in December, Feigin opts for a sweater, not a suit and tie. And I think what happened in this year, in so many ways, was a great splash of ice water thinking like, "Boy, we got a long way to go." But then theres, in this group weve got 300 full-time people and 250 of them are involved in volunteering. Not everyone is. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think it's like I take everything from athletics. I mean, I probably publicly spoke for the first time in my life 100 times in the first 200 days to everybody from Lions Clubs to the barber shop, to the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts to kind of preach how big a deal it is for city this size to have and keep an NBA team. John: Oh, my Gosh. While previous owner Herb Kohl, the five-term U.S. senator from Wisconsin, stood in high regard in Milwaukee, the franchise had begun to slip. "We have a. This is the Impact Podcast. How do we sit here and I think like, how could the Millwaukee Bucks not be, not Americas team, but Globals team. So, the end of the story is I was responsible to hire CEO, so I got two or three candidates I knew Mark and Wes would hate and they couldn't hire them because they didn't like something about them. What people never tell you about the rings, its not just the 20 rings for the players and the coach and the owners. Alex Woodhouse "I thought I'd hit the jackpot," Feigin said. I think if I had kind of the listening skills that I still need to get better at, I would be better at kind of understanding. Because I don't think we're really worried about kind of like we would think half a million people are going to die, that what would happen to hospitals and ICUs and things like that. always network, and in my chance, it really happened with my identical twin brother who was running a private school in New York, which all of Marc Lasry's and Wes Edens's kids went to. She's a teacher. And at the core, I've always been a sales and marketing guy. So, I'm, as you know, extremely excitable and just want to kind of attack it and love the challenge. Michael Red: And so, through all of the minutiae and all of 2020 and now going into the new season, which we're in now, managing to still focus the organization on winning the championship. By form, I think your strength of your network is as strong and as smart as you can possibly be. Why wouldn't you embrace Michael Red to really be a reflection of our franchise in such a great way because it's kind of what the great teams and brands do around the world is we've got this unbelievable legacy, which, you're a part of. My father happened to pass away probably within a couple months and very close with Mark and Wes, who basically at that time said, Well, you now have to really consider this and do this. And at the time, I always say, I was their last hope because of the timing of the acquisition. She's terrific and just the whole organization and I'm honored to be a part of the family, man. And remember, betting on yourself is the secret to your success. Feigin says Bucks Gaming will consist of roughly 10 full-time employees, including the team's five players, who will be housed by the franchise. Peter Feigin: This is where I want to be. My son was a freshman at San Joaquin Memorial High School when Brook Lopez was there and he played with Brook under coach Pat Giles. John: What did you study? And you've done this a number of times throughout your career and your life. Right now, its very hard to figure out and understand where its going, because this is the wild West. I wanted to be in marketing in sales. When he called Milwaukee "the most segregated, racist place I've ever experience in my life" in 2016, Feigin was just being a straight shooter intent on improving the neighborhood. I wander around the house, Feigin said in a recent telephone interview. Feigin, 50, calls his game the Saturday Morning Run popularly known among its members as The Run or S.M.R. and he has a massive collection of T-shirts to prove it. But this is literally a business based on humans and psychology and emotion and how we feel every day. So, this had been a surreal year and tough as a leader because it's exhausting. Then she just starts laughing. John: Hey, Peter. Its really important and youve got to take a real responsibility. We've got one of the global sports stars in the world. As commissioner of one of New York Citys longstanding pickup basketball games, Dan Feigin always knew where he would be every Saturday morning: inside the subterranean gymnasium at Trevor Day School in Manhattan, where he has worked for nearly three decades as a teacher, coach and administrator. Im addicted now to the operating side of the challenge of constant improvement, and how would you look at an organization and dive in there and really look to re-engineer tweak, and build for revenue growth? I asked every good question, every dumb question you could possibly imagine to really learn. My wife is like, What are you doing? I dont know what Im doing!. Talk about all the nuances and the dynamics and the pressure was to lead through COVID. I actually read a whole story, theres a whole article, Peter, about your ring. We've got Peter Feigin. What you do is you submarine the entire process into yourself. That automatically and having him sign for the next five years, that gives you this springboard that we think. That's like, that's today's kind of like, "What are we focused on?". This kind of like, "Why are we looking at other people's metrics? Theyre going to look at that ring forever and remember that. Antetokounmpo signed a four-year, $100 million extension in September 2016 (right before his first All-Star season) that will keep him under contract in Milwaukee through 2020-21. So, he's at the All-Star game and I literally said, "It's too bad we're not on Zoom," because I'm holding these. And I've got to get Mark and Wes on the cast along with Jon. Is this coming? So, I don't think uncommon to probably everybody and certainly every leader, everybody who has a real responsibility, the last 12 months were like nothing we could have ever imagined, we could have ever thought about and really reacted to. So, thank you for being on the cast today. Feigin can do all the PR he wants, but the most effective pitch to get fans into the new arena is out of his hands. Ill tell you how it I got the offer, the conversation and we play a pickup game of basketball every Saturday for 20 years with the same guys. I think to be successful here and take it from a very fast talking, sometimes lazy speaking New Yorker, who swears too much and does everything. Peter: got to do what youre going to say and say what youre going to do and really be substantial. And we're going to be the No. You talk about how do people help you think through clutch times. What did your dad do for a living? Feigin's twin brother, Daniel, is director of the upper school at New York City's Trevor Day School. I don't know, being able to be a business person and kind of get away from your day job and go into a data room of a pro team seemed just the greatest thing I'd ever experienced. Peter Feigin: And how we almost flaunt it in a good way and it's kind of easy. And what sort of plan could we have when there was some sort of light at the end of the tunnel to kind of ramp back up in a big way. John: In terms of watching the young generation now come up, has NIL and the advent of NIL do you believe thats going to have a positive or negative effect as you continue to recruit players in the future? Michael Red: That's exciting, man. You talk about advantages, just the osmosis at our dinner table was I knew in two seconds like I wanted to be in business. And you immediately go into, "What does this look like? And he has represented at the highest level. Everybody at ball was just, you got to move, go leave now. But I could swear by the 10th time it happened, it was not an accident.. I answer that by saying like we were successful because at the time the Brooklyn Nets, the Orlando Magic, and a bunch of other teams were selfless with their help with us on how to have best practices on how to build an arena and how to build an infrastructure on how to form. How we build our brand and how we build our awareness and likability around that, it's just kind of one of those no-brainers, too. There's got to be ways to get there. The good news is it's pretty small shop. Michael Red: If you had to go back to your 16-year-old self, what advice would you give your 16-year-old self? In the middle of New York and your, John: You knew you wanted to be a business person when you went to. And our expectations are to consistently improve and grow as a business and consistently improve on the court and vie for a championship. There was a collective effort on you guys to really, really embrace the city. Peter Feigin: And I'm digging into the business, and I had no desire to run it or to move to Milwaukee. So, I might have caught myself parking in that situation a couple of times as well and he's starting to document it, that I was a hypocrite. And claimed, so before I did it again, I changed the two spots by the testing place to instead of handicap, they now say "Employee of the Month" right on the floor. Im not a big fan of, hey, we need to make money or consult off that. I always joke that we could run a country, dAmboise said. Like Jeff Eisenband on Facebook. We closed our restaurants down. Peter: You are doing your employees, your service, your limited partners so it is a huge process. And that's what we try to do. Peter: Obviously, we have like, all of them are employee resource groups. John: Its so amazing you say that. And we'll get into the twin in a little bit. Peter: Yeah. Peter Feigin: These are all massive, huge, systematic problems for generations that we've got to chip away from every day. He wants to know what the answers are. And obviously, you have dealt with a little bit of this with Sterling Brown a couple years ago, so you guys happened to prepare for this a little bit. You start with whats the goal? Weve had Giannis invest in the brewers, which is like. People who do argue are kind of not allowed back.. He's not the smartest guy in the world, but he'll certainly know the business and he'll help you out beyond your hedge fund guys and your data guys.". I know youve said your pops passed. My fantasy, I had two fantasies growing up. Youve got Wes Edens who has probably started up dozens of companies in private equity and has an unbelievable kind of entrepreneurial spirit.
